Mardi Gras has taken Carnival Cruise Line into a new era of cruising as a new Excel-class cruise ship and fully powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). Following the global pandemic and multiple delays, Mardi Gras finally began sailing on July 31, 2021, from Port Canaveral in Florida. Carnival Celebration is the second Excel-class vessel and sister ship to Mardi Gras. The Carnival Celebration arrived during a year of Carnival Cruise Line’s 50th birthday festivities and was christened in Miami, Florida. Like the Costa Venezia, the Costa Firenze was initially intended for service in China and will join the Costa by Carnival brand. Originally built for cruising in China, the Costa Venezia will be operated under the new Costa by Carnival brand starting in 2023. Currently in service for Costa Cruises in Europe, the Costa Luminosa will join the Carnival Cruise Line fleet in September. The Carnival Cruise Line fleet is set to grown significantly over the next two years.

The Spirit-class vessel began sailing following a dry dock to receive her new Carnival colors in September 2022. Carnival Cruise Line currently has two more Excel class cruise ship on order. The ships will be 180,000 gross tons in size, the largest ever built by Carnival. Carnival Jubilee is the third Excel-class ship with the cruise line and was entered into service in December of 2023.

Although the renovated ships are as good as new, they are not as large or have some of the newest features available on the Excel Class ships like Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Carnival Cruise Line has changed the names of three of its ships over the years. In order to enhance the ships, they have undergone a thorough dry dock renovation process where they are stripped down and updated with new features and décor.

All the way forward on Deck 18 is the adults-only Serenity Deck, with a pool, two hot tubs and the Fresh Creations custom salad bar. The ship is also the second Carnival vessel to bear the Celebration name. The first, known simply as Celebration, set sail for the line in 1987. It left the fleet in 2008 before ending up with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line as Grand Celebration, which was scrapped during the industry's pandemic pause in 2021. The only issue with this arrangement is that neither of these spots are big on vegetables; you can no longer get a salad at the pizza venue. If you want some greens with your pizza or turkey sandwich, you have to travel seven decks to the Lido Marketplace. Gone is the line's iconic soaring atrium, replaced by the three-deck-high Celebration Central with panoramic windows looking out to sea. Guy Fieri is no longer the only celebrity chef in town; he's joined by Shaquille O'Neal and Emeril Lagasse. Carnival's thrilling water parks now have to make room for a top-deck roller coaster, and the RedFrog Pub has been replaced by the indoor hangout in the Summer Landing zone.
Now with sailings returning soon, the cruise line is putting an emphasis on increasing the number of ships in its fleet once again. Today Carnival announced it will add two more ships by the end of 2023. These two new ships are scheduled to debut in 2027 and 2028 and will be powered by LNG. This will bring the number of Excel class ships in Carnival’s fleet to five. He's cute, he knows how to chill… and flavor is everything to the little guy.
