By contrast, frequent cruisers that have repeatedly docked in Cozumel tend to think that the terminals (and even the piers) are unquestionably designated for specific cruise lines. While many tour operators have booths at the cruise port offering day excursions, it might be more cost-effective and ensure availability if you pre-book, especially during peak seasons. While Spanish is the official language, many locals in the tourism industry speak English, especially around the cruise port and main attractions.

This place is the perfect place to break your fast when docking early for a day in Cozumel. Pescaderia also plays live music and is known for its accommodating and amiable owners and staff. This family-run restaurant has gluten-free options and reasonable prices for its high-quality food. There’s also the newer Pancho’s Backyard down by Carnival’s pier, Puerto Maya. But I prefer the Pancho’s to the north at Los Cinco Solas small shopping mall.

When it’s time to head back, there are showers available to wash off the salt and sand. There is also an aquatic park for the kids (costs extra), as well as paragliding, horseback riding, ATV or jet ski rentals. Cozumel is a playground for those looking to get outdoors at the beach or in the water. But it also has a number of things to do for those who want to experience history, culture, or just relax and be pampered. The symbol for pesos is the same as for US dollars, which can be slightly confusing. Prices in dollars (in tourist areas) are labeled "US$" or sport an S with a double stroke.
Wheelchair and Accessibility at the Cozumel Cruise Port
The non-adventurous will be glad to know there are a few American staples in Cozumel. There is a Subway, Pizza Hut, and Starbucks right near the Punta Langosta terminal and even a Burger King further inland. You can pay with US dollars, but it will be cheaper if you exchange for pesos first and use them. Credit cards are not accepted by taxi drivers so you will need to pay in cash. As soon as you get off the ship you will find vendors who are able to find you just about any type of vehicle to rent if you want to explore on your own.
Opposite from this area is the Mayan Plaza where visitors can shop, eat and even take souvenir photos at the Insta-worthy "Cozumel" sign. The only ways to get from the Cozumel International Airport to the Cozumel cruise port -- regardless of the terminal -- is by taxi or airport shuttle. As aforementioned, the cruise port in Cozumel includes three terminals named Punta Langosta, International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya. Note that some cruise lines use two or all of these terminals, so be sure to check your itinerary carefully to make sure you have the right terminal. As Cozumel became a popular cruise destination, many other attractions (besides its natural beauty) have developed.
The expansive port is beautifully designed and features plenty of shops. Puerta Maya boasts of at least 50 shopping outlets and additional 15 stands that sell authentic Mayan souvenirs. The shopping at this port is better than at the international port. Among the shops in the port are some recognizable names such as Del Sol, Dufry, Diamond International, Milano and Piranha Joes.

The are many things you can do at the town, including shopping, sightseeing, and going on a culinary tour. It is used by ships, ferries and some of the smaller cruise lines. This is the best port to dock at if you want to have an authentic Cozumel exploration since it’s right in the heart of San Miguel town. Cruise lines such as Norwegian, MSC, and Disney dock at this port.
Cozumel is located on an island and is a favorite cruise ship port in the Yucatan peninsula. Cruise ships dock by the city of San Miguel which is a ferry ride away from the equally busy Playa del Carmen and 50 miles south of the major resort of Cancun. Puerta Maya PierThe most southern pier, Puerta Maya, has the capacity for four cruise ships at once. Walking from the ship to the port area can be a lengthy walk — especially in the heat and humidity. Essentially a small city is built here to cater to cruise passengers before they head out to the city and before they return back to the ship. Once you get a taxi, you can visit any destination of your choice including some of the popular beach and beach clubs in the island.

Most violence seems to stay on the mainland and away from the popular tourist areas. For finding the right spot, we recommend just checking out the menus as you pass. Most restaurants have menus posted outside where you can see if it fits what you want to eat and your budget. But if you’re anywhere near the ports or water, you’ll find all sorts of options. For a full list of things to do in Cozumel for your cruise, we’ve covered more than 60 ideas here, ranging from adventure sports to cool indoor activities. Below we have a few of the more popular things for cruise passengers to do, but it’s really just the tip of the iceberg for things to do.
Almost all short cruises from South Florida or the Gulf states plus Western Caribbean itineraries include a visit to Cozumel. This year, Cozumel expects nearly 4 million cruise passengers. There are so many things to do that it’s tough to decide the best things to do in Cozumel, especially when you only have one day in port. Take your pre-booked taxi service directly to the Cozumel ferry terminal as that's an unmissable part of the journey to Cozumel. Taxi service is available 24/7 at the Cancun International Airport, but this must be booked in advance online. There are private shuttle services available as well from the Cancun International Airport.
Here, you can rent a hammock or lounger or use your belongings for sitting privately and spending time alone in paradise. Included with the tour package are lounge chairs, hammocks, a water park, plus lunch and beverages. If you really want to get away from the crowds and stay on the west (calmer seas) side of Cozumel, this is a great choice. If you’re looking for dessert, it’s a short taxi ride to the nearby Kakao Chocolate Factory. Cozumel was also once a refuge for pirates and trading ships, giving them a place to replenish and feel protected by the dangerous coral reef. Eventually, in 1518, with the first Spanish expedition, the Spaniards occupy the land, finally making it the most prominent island inhabited by Mexico.
This is only a four-minute drive or 11-minute walk from Punta Langosta, and a 10-minute drive from both Puerta Maya and the International Cruise Terminal. The Cozumel Island Museum ($4 per person and children under 8 enter free) is just a couple of blocks north of the square. Besides the exhibits, the museum's restaurant is nice and has a great view. Rachel plugs away at cozinfo.com when she's not taking underwater photos, trying a new local restaurant, or teaching ESL.
There is a plethora of options for renting a vehicle and driving around Cozumel as well. The island is easy to navigate in a matter of a couple hours if you don’t make too many stops. Many times I’ve had locals on the island help me out or point me in the right direction all while asking for nothing in return. The economy of Cozumel relies heavily on tourism, so the people there will be very glad to help you and make sure you have a pleasant experience.
Other than the three piers mentioned in this article, there is also the Ferry Pier. If you want to take a trip to Playa Del Carmen, at the ferry pier is where your trip will start at. Taxis are available on this port, for $10 each way to San Miguel. Try sharing the ride with 3 other people so that you can split the cost. It offers beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding areas and a good atmosphere to enjoy your meal in. If you happen to be in Cozumel on a Sunday, then you should definitely visit the town square.
